Migration Watch UK press comment on today's report by Another Europe Is Possible

September 21, 2017

Campaign group Another Europe is Possible has proposed a post-Brexit system of 'free movement plus' for EU immigration.

Commenting, Alp Mehmet, Vice Chairman of Migration Watch UK, said:

This is a recipe for mass immigration for ever and a day wrapped up in references to workers rights. It is bound to increase and set in stone even greater incentives for those coming to take up the low-skill jobs, treble or quadruple their wages, live in basic, often appalling, accommodation and send large sums of money home. Hardly good news for British workers and most certainly not what Labour supporters who voted to leave the EU would want.

Note to Editors

The assertion in the Executive Summary of the report that migrants make a net contribution to the public finances is completely unfounded. A study for the Centre for Research and Analysis of Migration (CReAM) at University College London found a fiscal cost of £114 billion (or £18 million a day) over the period 1995-2011. Using the same methodology, Migration Watch UK found that the cost to the Exchequer in 2014/15 of migrants in the UK was between £13 billion and £17 billion.
