Alp Mehmet, Vice Chair of Migration Watch UK, said:
The Migration Advisory Committee report is a carefully worked-out analysis with serious recommendations. We welcome proposals targeted at how best to prioritise the skills that migrants bring to the UK. It is also crucial to address potential disincentives to the training of the domestic workforce. As the report makes clear, there are some occupations, particularly in the public sector, in which Tier 2 migrants are paid substantially less than similar native workers. As a result, the raising of the minimum salary requirements for Tier 2 visas is an important step to guard against the risk of undercutting. Nonetheless, the MAC also notes that their proposals will do little to reduce overall net migration as is the government’s professed aim.
