‘Immigration: enough is enough.’ That’s the motion for The Spectator’s next debate, and also a major concern for many voters. Net migration at 250,000 in 2010 is well above the ‘tens of thousands’ that the Conservatives are committed to by the end of this Parliament. Should they do more to meet it, so that the UK’s economic and cultural fabric isn’t frayed irreparably? Or should we be glad that the numbers remain very high, because immigration is a crucial ingredient for growth? These and other issues will be discussed by our panellists.
Taking part for the motion will be MP for Birkenhead and Co-Chairman of the Cross Party Group on Balanced Migration, the Rt Hon Frank Field, Dominic Raab MP for Esher and Walton and Magistrate and member of the Migration Watch UK Advisory Council, Kiran Bali. Against the motion will be author, broadcaster and journalist David Aaronovitch, leader writer and columnist for The Times Oliver Kamm, and the writer and broadcaster Jenni Russell.
