Your leading article (“Census and sensibility”, July 17) suggests that population size is not a cause for concern. That will surprise many of your readers, especially those in England and certainly those in London and the South East where daily life consists of overcrowded trains, congested roads, makeshift classrooms, and long queues to see a GP.
England is the sixth most crowded country in the world (excluding island and city states) and two thirds of its rapid growth is being driven by mass immigration. Nobody disputes that a moderate level of immigration is of benefit, economically and culturally. But scale is crucial.
