The number of migrants illegally crossing the English Channel shot past the 100,000 mark on Thursday 10th August.

Unbelievably, Border Force was all but caught unprepared as around 600 people made their way in assorted small boats in ideal conditions. By mid-afternoon they had set foot on Blighty. Their supporters, migrant-rights groups and well-placed legal teams will move heaven and earth to make sure that those feet remain firmly on British soil.

It was a moment that had been expected for weeks, with boats only being kept at bay by bad weather. As our chairman said, it seems the weather is better able to defend our borders than the Border Force.

This week had been labelled ‘Small Boats Week’ by the government. They sought to divert attention from the looming milestone with a series of eye-catching announcements and implied policy commitments. It was never going to work.
