Report by Independent Chief Inspector of Borders on tackling illegal working

May 09, 2019

Commenting, Lord Green of Deddington, Chairman of Migration Watch UK, said:

It is a real concern that efforts to tackle the Windrush Affair have had a serious negative impact on staff morale in the Home Office. Most commentators fail to acknowledge that this issue goes back to the 1950s and that placing the blame on today's officials for what has happened is extremely unfair. Furthermore, Opposition attacks on the 'hostile environment' ignore the fact that the policy originated under Labour. Meanwhile, the public have got it right. One poll has found that 77% think illegal immigration is a serious problem facing the country.

Note to editors

  • Read the Chief Inspector's report.
  • The report notes that 'there is no reliable estimate for the number of people working illegally in the UK'. However, it adds that 'in September 2015 [Immigration Enforcement] noted in an internal report that it had been estimated that “between 190,000 and 240,000 businesses employ illegal migrants”'.
  • The Chief Inspector also released a new report on the Home Office’s Reporting and Offender Management processes and of its management of non-detained Foreign National Offenders.
