A six-month-old baby was among the victims of a migrant shipwreck in the Mediterranean and a further 74 people drowned in a second sinking yesterday amid a surge in sailings from Libya to Europe.

The infant boy was on a crowded dinghy sailing from Libya that sank as a ship operated by the Spanish charity Open Arms was trying to save the passengers.

As rescuers tried to pull the migrants from the sea on Wednesday, his mother could be heard crying: “Did you see my baby? I lost my baby! Why me? Why my baby?”

Five bodies and 113 survivors were pulled from the waves, including the baby Joseph, from Guinea, who was struggling to breathe.
