1     Introduction<\/span><\/p>\n

This paper outlines the many myths that are put forward by the mass immigration lobby in support of the current levels of immigration and dispels each myth in turn.<\/span><\/p>\n

2    \u2018Immigration provides great economic benefit\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

For many years the government claimed that immigration added \u00a36 billion a year to GDP. However, the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee, reporting in April 2008, said that what mattered was GDP per head. They concluded that:<\/span><\/p>\n

             \u201cWe have found no evidence for the argument, made by the government,<\/span><\/p>\n

            business and many others, that net immigration generates significant<\/span><\/p>\n

            economic benefits for the existing UK population\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

 In January 2012 the Migration Advisory Committee went further. They said that even GDP per head exaggerated the benefit of immigration because:<\/span><\/p>\n

              \u201cIt is the immigrants themselves rather than the extant residents who are<\/span>the main gainers\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n

 They suggested that the GDP of residents should be the main focus.<\/span><\/p>\n

 They recognised that the resident population would gain via any \u201cdynamic effects\u201d of skilled immigration on productivity and innovation \u2013 these \u201cexist and may be large, but they are elusive to measure\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n
