The IPPR recently published a report looking at youth
\nunemployment in London[1]<\/a>.  In the report they appear to recognise that inward
\nmigration from abroad is one of the factors that has affected the employment
\nchances of young Londoners.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmployers have also
\nbecome increasingly reluctant to hire teenagers, particularly in London. Only 6
\nper cent of UK employers, and just 3 per cent of employers in the capital,
\nrecruit straight from school. As a result, school-leavers compete with more
\nexperienced workers for the same jobs, in addition to competing with more
\nhighly qualified young people. Despite the vibrancy of London\u2019s economy, the
\ninward flow of migration from other regions and abroad has resulted in a highly
\ncompetitive environment at the lower end of the labour market. Many of these
\nrelatively well-skilled new residents take on lowpaid jobs while they finish their studies or
\nlook for something better , leaving those with the weakest skills and
\nexperience more likely to be \u2018squeezed out\u2019.\u201d[2]<\/a><\/p>\n

We welcome this apparent outbreak of common sense at the
\nIPPR and hope that it is allowed continue.<\/p>\n
