The IPS still cannot distinguish<br \/>\ndeparting workers from departing students.&#0160;&#0160;<br \/>\nA recent Home Office study of a sample of cases, \u2018The Migrant Journey\u2019,<br \/>\nfound that after five years, 20% of students remained in the UK legally. The<br \/>\nother 80% were described as \u201cno longer in the immigration system\u201d.&#0160; However, this is not evidence that they had<br \/>\nleft the UK. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>International<br \/>\nstudents were worth \u00a38 billion to the UK economy in 2008\/09.<\/em><\/strong><a href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Migration<br \/>\nWatch UK estimate that non-EU students were in fact worth \u00a34.3 billion, of<br \/>\nwhich \u00a32.1 billion came from tuition fees.<a href=\"#_ftn2\">[2]<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>The UK<br \/>\nis beginning to look less attractive to international<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>students<\/em><\/strong>.<br \/>\n<strong><em>&#0160;<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Results<br \/>\nof an NUS survey suggest that 40% of students would not recommend the UK as a<br \/>\nplace to study. However, Mr David Willetts, revealed that UCAS applications<br \/>\nfrom outside the EU were up by 13% on the previous year.<a href=\"#_ftn3\">[3]<\/a><br \/>\n<strong><em>&#0160;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>The UK<br \/>\nhas lost share in the global market for international students.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The NUS<br \/>\nclaim that the UK\u2019s share fell from 10.8% in 2000 to 9.9% in 2009. In fact,<br \/>\nstudent numbers rose from 223,000 to 363,000. A more appropriate measure of the<br \/>\nUK share is that of students who go to MESDCs \u2013 Mainly English speaking destination<br \/>\ncountries. The UK had 24.6% of this market in 2000, falling slightly to 23.6%<br \/>\nin 2009. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>The<br \/>\ntiming of the revocation of LMU\u2019s licence is \u201calarming\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It<br \/>\nwould seem however that LMU was given a deadline by the UKBA within which to<br \/>\naddress compliance issues found at an earlier inspection.
