Sir Andrew Green is Chairman of <\/em><\/strong>Migrationwatch UK<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Does the government\u2019s political imperative to get immigration down to
\nacceptable levels conflict with their economic imperative to stimulate economic
\ngrowth? <\/p>\n

\nFor business generally, the
\nanswer is a resounding \u201cno\u201d.  There are no limits on the transfer of
\ninternational staff, vital to so many companies based here.  Only half of
\nthe available work permits (about 20,000 a year) have, so far, been taken
\nup.  Special visas for entrepreneurs and investors are unlimited but the
\ntake up has been very limited \u2013 only 360 entrepreneurs and 300 investors had
\ntaken advantage of these routes by last Autumn.  Meanwhile, the arrival of
\n1.5 million business visitors every year suggests that Britain is indeed open
\nfor business.<\/p>\n
