The
\ntaxpayer is forking out over \u00a31 million per week in child benefit to the
\nparents whose children who do not even live in the UK, the think tank Migration
\nWatch UK reveals today in a new Briefing Paper<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The
\nrevelation comes following the disclosure that child benefit and tax credits
\nare paid in respect of almost 50,000 children who live across the EU.<\/p>\n

The
\nmajority, almost 30,000, of the 50,000 children who receive child benefit and
\nchild tax credits at UK rates live in Poland.<\/p>\n

Child benefit in the UK<\/a> is worth \u00a381.20 per month for the first
\nchild and \u00a353.60 for the second and subsequent  children.  This is
\nroughly four times higher than Polish rates.<\/p>\n

Only
\nin the UK, Czech Republic, Germany, Latvia and the Netherlands do the rules
\nallow child benefit to be paid for children who live elsewhere in the EU. The
\nremaining 22 countries require that the child be resident in the territory in
\norder to qualify.<\/p>\n

Commenting,
\nSir Andrew Green, Chairman of Migration Watch UK, said, \u2018It is absurd that
\nchild benefit is paid to children who do not even live in the UK. At a time
\nthat UK taxpayers are being asked to tighten their belts, the government is
\npaying out over \u00a31 million per week to support children in other countries
\nwhere costs are, in any case, often much lower. The majority of EU countries
\nhave the good sense to ensure that the child in question must be resident in
\nthat country in order to qualify and it is about time the UK did the same.\u2019<\/p>\n
