This makes no sense. Those wrongly caught up in Windrush had every right to be here and bear no comparison to\u00a0people who have either entered illegally or stayed on illegally and know full well that they have no right to be here.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>&#8220;An amnesty for them would be manna for traffickers. It would encourage\u00a0further illegal inflows,\u00a0reward\u00a0illicit behaviour, be costly to UK taxpayers and\u00a0be grossly\u00a0unfair to migrants who follow the rules. Amnesties do not work, as Spain and Italy have proved.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Note to editors<\/span>:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The&nbsp;<em>Daily Ma<\/em><em>il<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-7218033\/Boris-Johnson-promises-change-law-sex-attackers-increase-stop-search.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports<\/a>&nbsp;that Mr Johnson&nbsp;<em>&#8216;<\/em><em>is considering an &#8220;amnesty&#8221;&nbsp;for tens of thousands of illegal&nbsp;immigrants who have been in Britain for more than 15 years [and] c<\/em><em>laims the radical plan would stop a repeat of the Windrush scandal where long-term residents were wrongly deported&#8217;.&nbsp;<\/em><\/li><li>There are estimated to be over a million illegal immigrants already here.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Former senior officials suggest the Home Office has already estimated the&nbsp;illegal population to be increasing by at least 150,000 per year.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.migrationwatchuk.org\/briefing-paper\/455\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">estimate<\/a>&nbsp;is a net increase of 70,000 per year.&nbsp;<\/li><li>77% of the public say illegal immigration is a serious problem facing the country (Project28 poll, 2018).<\/li><li>The Home Office&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/249122\/sham_marriage_impact_assessment.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;in 2013 that each additional person staying on costs the taxpayer between \u00a34,000 and \u00a37,500 in health, education and welfare.&nbsp;<em><strong>Why should UK taxpayers fund all this?<\/strong><\/em><\/li><li>It is nonsense to&nbsp;cite Windrush in connection with a proposed&nbsp;amnesty for illegal immigration. In the case of the&nbsp;amnesty, those concerned have broken the law and know it.
