A study issued today<\/a> by
\nMigrationwatch UK has examined how the number of EU immigrants has
\nbeen undercounted by half a million over a ten year period \u2013 a difference the
\nsize of Manchester. The mistake was
\ndiscovered by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) when they compared the
\nresults of the recent census with the population that they had expected to find
\non the basis of births, deaths and the official immigration figures.<\/p>\n

This discovery means that net
\nforeign immigration between mid 1997 and mid 2010 now totals very nearly 4
\nmillion. Allowing for the 1 million
\nBritish citizens who emigrated in that period, net immigration comes to 3
\nmillion.  That is its direct effect on
\nthe population of the UK although it takes no account of illegal
\nimmigration.<\/p>\n

Amazingly, the ONS have refused
\nto revise the official immigration numbers for the period despite having
\nregularly done so in the past when much smaller errors were discovered.<\/p>\n

The revised numbers would show
\nthat net immigration reached a peak of 325,000 in 2005 \u2013 six times the level of
\n1997. By 2010 it had fallen to 260,000.\n<\/p>\n

Commenting, Sir Andrew Green<\/a>,
\nChairman of Migrationwatch UK said \u201c4 million immigrants in 13 years is an
\nastonishing figure \u2013 the highest in our history, including the Norman conquest
\nin 1066. This new information underlines the scale of the task faced by the
\npresent government in getting the numbers down\u201d.<\/p>\n

Migrationwatch has called on
\nthe Statistics Authority, the watchdog in these matters, to insist that the
\nofficial figures be revised. Said Sir
\nAndrew, \u201cThere is no point in burying bad news in obscure documents. That simply destroys trust. It is hard to think of set of statistics that
\nis more important to the public. For the
\nsake of public confidence in government statistics there must be a thorough
\nrevision of the immigration statistics and the new figures must be published
\nwithout delay\u201d. <\/p>\n
