To see if there has been a recent increase in<br \/>\nimmigration from the EU14 there are three useful sources of data: Long Term<br \/>\nInternational Migration Data (LTIM); Annual Population Survey (APS) and;<br \/>\nNational Insurance Numbers (NINOs).&#0160; The<br \/>\nAPS data has only been available since 2004 and so this is the start date for<br \/>\nthe analysis<\/p>\n<p><strong>LTIM<br \/>\ndata<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2. Since 2004 annual immigration from the EU14 has<br \/>\nbeen estimated at between 70,000 and 90,000 while the estimate for net<br \/>\nmigration from the EU14 has usually varied between 30,000 and 40,000. It did<br \/>\nfall in December 2010 to 18,000 but then returned to 34,000 in 2011. The latest<br \/>\nfigure for the year ending September 2012 is 30,000. However, it should be<br \/>\nnoted that the error margin for EU14 migration in +\/- 15,000 so small changes<br \/>\nfrom year to year are not significant. <\/p>\n<p><strong>APS<br \/>\ndata<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>3. This is also an estimate based on a sample of the<br \/>\npopulation. Table One below shows the population estimates for the EU14 and<br \/>\nseparately for Greece, Spain, France and Italy. <\/p>\n<p>Table One: Annual Population estimates for the EU14<br \/>\nand key countries<\/p>\n<p>\n<a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"http:\/\/migrationwatchuk.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d835508fcf69e201901e4a0adc970b-pi\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Table 1\" border=\"0\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d835508fcf69e201901e4a0adc970b image-full\" src=\"http:\/\/migrationwatchuk.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d835508fcf69e201901e4a0adc970b-800wi\" title=\"Table 1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Figures in thousands<\/p>\n<p>The figure for EU14 does indicate that the<br \/>\npopulation in the UK increased in 2011. <\/p>\n<p>&#0160;<strong>NINOs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>4. Unlike the LTIM and APS data the data on national<br \/>\ninsurance numbers is an actual number and not an estimate. Table Two below show<br \/>\nthe annual number of NINOS issued for the EU14 and separately for Greece,<br \/>\nSpain, France and Italy.<\/p>\n<p>Table Two: NINOs issued to nationals of the EU14 and<br \/>\nkey countries <\/p>\n<p>&#0160;<br \/>\n<a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"http:\/\/migrationwatchuk.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d835508fcf69e201901e4a0b8c970b-pi\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Table 2\" border=\"0\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d835508fcf69e201901e4a0b8c970b image-full\" src=\"http:\/\/migrationwatchuk.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d835508fcf69e201901e4a0b8c970b-800wi\" title=\"Table 2\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This shows a clear increase in NINOs issued for the<br \/>\nEU14 as a whole and for Spain in particular, in 2011.&#0160; This suggests that immigration from the EU14<br \/>\nis increasing however it gives no indication as to how many migrants from these<br \/>\ncountries are staying in the UK for over a year (or indefinitely).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>5. There is some evidence to suggest that<br \/>\nimmigration from the EU14 is increasing however it does not yet indicate a<br \/>\nlarge upsurge in migration.
