Insults flew between countries at the sharp end of the migrant surge into Europe as at least six more children lost their lives on the crossing from Turkey.

The Hungarian government called Croatia’s prime minister “pathetic”, Romania called Hungary’s closure of its borders “autistic” and Hungary replied by taunting Romania over corruption charges faced by its prime minister.

Croatia continued to redirect hundreds of migrants across its border with Hungary, while Austria said that 11,000 crossed its borders on Saturday.

In an attempt to stem the flow, the European Commission is to redirect up to €1 billion from the EU aid budget to Turkey to improve conditions for the two million migrants in camps there.
