A mother and son were caught smuggling two Vietnamese citizens in the boot of their car as part of a “carefully organised” operation.

James Liddiard, 30, and Andrea Cavanagh, 52, were among six people traffickers based in Merseyside who tried to transport 11 undocumented migrants from France to the UK within a week.

The mother and son claimed to have been returning from a day trip to Paris when they were stopped. They were sentenced at Canterbury crown court this week after admitting facilitating unlawful immigration.

The smugglers “worked in pairs”, with the first journey being traced to December 9, 2018, the court was told on Tuesday.
