The head of Britain’s big-business lobby group will tell a conference today that immigration is no longer considered a way forward to fix the labour market.

The CBI has argued for an easing of immigration rules for specific jobs and voiced opposition to government plans for the immigration system after Brexit, but Tony Danker, its director-general, admits that seven years after the referendum the country has “taken immigration off the table as a way to fix our labour market”.

He said: “I think the politicians are fundamentally wrong about that, but they don’t want to have the conversation.”

Instead, Danker will shift his focus to the domestic labour market to promote policies that he hopes will encourage millions of people into the workforce.
