Indians account for the third-largest contingent of migrants who have crossed the Channel in small boats so far this year, Home Office officials have told The Times.

They believe that Indian students are using a loophole in asylum rules that allows asylum seekers to study in the UK and pay domestic rather than international fees. About 250 Indian migrants have arrived in small boats this year, a fifth of the 1,180 that have crossed this year.

It is more than the 233 Indian migrants who crossed the Channel in the first nine months of last year. The surge has left Home Office officials scrambling to find out what is driving it and has prompted fears that thousands more will follow given the country’s population of
