The home secretary admitted that the government has lost control of the UK’s borders as a row broke out among senior Tories over who is to blame for the crisis in accommodating migrants.
Suella Braverman insisted that she was not responsible for overcrowding last month at the Manston processing centre in Kent. She said it was the fault of migrants who exploited the “generosity of the British people”.
Home Office sources blamed Priti Patel, accusing her of failing to book enough hotels when she was home secretary over the summer. She has threatened to take action against staff at the Home Office after claims that she had slowed down the hotel procurement process by requiring ministers to sign off bookings from mid-June.
