Times letters: Deterring people smugglers and migrants

Sir, As people seeking asylum continue to reach our shores by boat or dinghy from France the government is trying to find ways to stop them. The reality is that when fleeing war, terrorism and persecution, ordinary people are forced to take extraordinary steps to seek safety in another country. For those coming to the UK fleeing nations such as Syria and Afghanistan, it’s the same as it was for those who fled the Nazis.

Fewer people seek asylum in the UK than in Germany and France. Melanie Phillips claims we are a soft touch (“Tough talk won’t solve the migrant problem”, Mar 2) but there is no credible evidence that people try to get here because they think they will be given a job
