From the start of the coronavirus pandemic, Boris Johnson has too often done too little, too late. Too late into lockdown; too late to introduce quarantine on arrival and too late to wake up to the prospect of a second wave. Too little on a world-beating track-and-trace programme, sending Britain soaring up the global rankings for infections and deaths. To give mass vaccination, Britain’s brightest prospect, the best chance of succeeding, the government must secure the country’s borders against imports of new coronavirus strains. Mr Johnson came into office vowing to “take back control of our borders”. Where the coronavirus is concerned, he has all too often left the control to foreign governments.
